I think some of this depends on the scope of the project.

For smaller projects, I usually talk clients through the process and expectations verbally and may explain in briefly in the project proposal.

For bigger, more complicated projects, I’ll do that, but also provide a detailed timeline for the project or set up a Teamwork project that lets them see milestones, deadlines, etc.

A lot of this really depends on the client. One recent client I worked with loved Teamwork and enjoyed being able to see everything on a calendar or with dates/deadlines connected with tasks.

Other clients are less comfortable with tech/tools like that and just need more informal communication to help them stay clear on where we are.

One of the things I always try to do when I talk to client(s) on a call/meeting is start with “here’s what we did last time, what we decided,” then review work, talk about current questions, and make decisions, then close with a review of the decisions made, action items, and a preview of what we’ll cover the next time we connect. In other words, review where we were, cover where we are now, then preview what comes next.
